Shut Your Mouth!
This is one of the first things I teach my clients that I train to improve not only training performance, but also improve:
- Mental capacity
- Stress levels
Mouth breathing can lead to:
- Mis-shapen jaws and airways
- Increased stress levels
- Decreased endurance and stamina
- Sleep apnea
- High blood pressure
- Increased heart rate
- Dry mouth
- Increased water loss
- …and more
Obviously all these issues would hinder your performance and can lead to serious issues down the road if not prevented by just breathing better.
It all starts with closing your mouth to retrain your breath and breathe through your nose.
How to retrain your breath
Get comfortable with keeping your mouth closed by doing light activity at first, this could be house work, or going for a walk around the block. Eventually you want to increase the intensity and maintain your cool to facilitate only breathing through your nose.
You can hold an implement like a straw or pencil between your lips. You can use a piece of scotch tape vertically to help hold your lips together. One of my favorites which was taught to me back in my Z-Health Strength certification course in 2010 was to hold water in your mouth while you perform your activities.
